I liked the different approaches of memory through individual characters’ life stories which entail us to consider our own memory / memories in an all the more stimulating way.
I dislike collections of short stories, but made an exception for this one. Only six stories on 242 pages is one reason, the powerful science- and SF-based title story another. Their wide scope in time and place is formidable: all stories deal with the universe of stars from which our earth once sprang, leaving us humans as a late and new, superior, created or evolved species to wonder about the origins of life and memories of ancient times in the form of e.g. stars, rivers, fossils or sturgeons. The stories are situated in South Africa, China, Korea, Lithuania and Germany, with links in some to mid-western US states. One stays in the US state of Wyoming altogether. Finally, the author has created a raft of loveable, struggling or doomed characters, whose fates are for readers to discover and enjoy or pity. All stories deal with the concept of memory in an honest, exceptionally well-researched and emphatic manner. Anthony Doerr offers brilliant samples of his skills when writing about different aspects of and symbols for memory loss (Alzheimer) and memory regained in the first and last tale. The most heart-rending, but not completely hopeless story, is about mourning, confused 15-year old Allie from Kansas, recently orphaned and consigned to be cared for by her granddad in Lithuania, reliving her Kansas past and memories there, but also sticking to a miracle she witnessed in Lithuania and being ultimately vindicated. Each story contains one or more people like Allie, able to transcend the boundaries of memory to move to a higher level of insight.Do not miss this exceptional collection!
Having loved "All the Light You Cannot See," I've now started reading Doerr's short stories. This collection was amazingly diverse and complex. The title story takes place in South Africa and takes completely unexpected twists and turns, introducing characters and plot twists from dementia to race relations, urban poverty to fossil hunters. All bound together by how memories are held and recalled. Doerr is a brilliant writer who draws you in with his story-telling. In other stories, you can find seeds of what bloomed into full plot lines in "All the Light," such as scenes of life in an orphanage, fascination with water and sea life, relationships between young people and the elderly -- each one leaving you wanting more.
I read "All the Light We Cannot See" and was blown away by the brillance of Anthony Doerr. I purchased this book hoping it would even come close to being as good. I was not let down at all. These are not stories you are going to read today and forget in a day or week. They get inside your mind, heart, and soul. Having had family members who suffered from memory loss as well as losing some of my memory, I can relate to the heartbreak on both sides. I found myself pondering these stories several times and finding new insights each time. This is definitely not a mindless beach or plane book. Savor it in peace and quiet with as little distraction as possible.I could not start reading a new book for a few days after finishing this. I was afraid it would be like enjoying a fine gourmet meal and then ruining that taste in your mouth by immediately eating a Big Mac.
This writer's style and beautiful use of language is compelling. This reads more like non-fiction probably because settings are real. This is a collection of short stores so tone is a bit different between them. I'd read his latest novel "All The Light We Cannot See" - which truly grabbed my head and heart throughout the read and still bounces into conscious thought months later - before I purchased this book.
The wise, deep stories of Anthony Doerr are a literary treasure. They are written with tenderness, perception of character and compassionate insight into the human heart. The collection centers around memory and their settings vary widely: an old woman remembering her long murdered girlfriends in a Nazi Germany orphanage; a woman seed keeper in a remote Chinese village which will soon be submerged by a dam, drowning her heritage and her own past; an American couple in such a desperate search to conceive a child that their lives are condensed to a singular purpose.Though old people die and are "glowing atlases dragged into graves," new generations of children are born and accumulate memories. "They push back the darkness; they scatter memories behind them like bread crumbs. The world is remade."How real the characters are! How deep their dreams; their past is as vividly alive to them as their present, in many cases more so. We are, the writer says, our memories. He writes with reverence and poetry of the incredible kindness between people in the worst of times and a singing belief in the human spirit.
I read All The Light We Cannot See by this author (which was an amazing book) so I bought this one. His writing makes you feel, see, hear, touch and smell what he's writing about. He writes in an interesting way that hooks me right in. The stories stay with you a bit after you read them... some need closure. But all attach you to the characters.
